A little over 6 years ago I big chopped. I got up one morning, after 3 months of transitioning and told my husband I was ready. I was ready to chop it all off. Was I scared? A little. It was the first time I would have really, really short hair.
I remember the day well. It was a Saturday morning, and my husband accompanied me to the salon. As the stylist cut off my relaxed hair and went shorter and shorter, I started feeling slight pangs of panic, and a little voice whispered, “girl, what are you doing?”
With about 2 inches of hair left on my head, my husband chimed in and said, “if you’re going to do it, then go all the way”, so I did. Six years later, going natural has been one of the best decisions I ever made!
One of the many reasons I love being natural is the versatility. In the over six years since I’ve been natural I have done more with my hair than I ever had. In the first few years I experimented with almost every style I have come across.
The decision to go natural also led me down a path to discovering passions I didn’t even know I had. About two years after I went natural, I took the first huge leap in the journey of stepping out of my comfort zone. I started my YouTube channel & my blog.
Since then, I have met some truly amazing people and had some absolutely amazing opportunities, all of which are as a result of making that one decision to embrace the beautiful hair that grows out of my scalp.
As a result of my decision to embrace my natural hair, I have been able to inspire so many others to do the same. It is such a great feeling to inspire and encourage others, just by being yourself.
Speaking of embracing your hair. Last week Dove Hair made curly girls everywhere rejoice with the launch of the Love Your Curls Emojis. I don’t know about you, but I love emojis. I think it’s safe to say 85% of my text conversations include emojis, because let’s face it, sometimes you just need a visual.
For a long time, us curly girls didn’t have emojis that represented us and our beautiful, versatile hair. Dove changed all of that with these Emojis.
If you haven’t yet done so, you can download the Dove Love Your Curls Emojis for free in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
YOUR TURN: What would you say is one of the best decisions you have ever made?
