I was sent two of Natural Hair Community‘s products for review, by Allison (Allie) the owner. I received 2oz samples of the Whipped Amla butter and the Growth Stimulating Hair Tea. I am a big fan of Ayurvedic products and ingredients, so I was looking forward to trying these products out.
Whipped Amla butter 2oz $5

According to the website, the whipped Amla butter is a “Light, airy, moisturizing whipped Shea butter that can be used to style and seal locs, braids, twist, and curls. Great to use as a head to toe moisturizer.”
The ingredients are all natural which is great.
Pure Unrefined Raw Ivory Shea Butter, Amla Powder, Hibiscus and Castor Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Essential Oil Blend. “

Based on the description, I expected the butter to be a lot lighter/fluffier. It’s actually very thick and takes a little while to be rubbed in, so you don’t need a lot. The butter has a very pleasant Lavender scent, which I like. I’m not not a huge fan of styling my hair with butters, so I started using the butter on my edge and nape area when I got my kinky twists.

It did a good job, but because of the ingredients (mainly the Shea butter), I decided not to continue because I didn’t intend to wash my hair, and I didn’t want it to build up.

I did use the butter on my feet after showering and at night and it performed the way I expected butters to perform. It kept my feet soft.

Growth Stimulating Hair Tea

The Growth Stimulating Hair tea is a blend of Rosemary, Lavender and Hibiscus Petals. The instructions say “Use as a final rinse, moisturizing spritz, in Ayurvedic mixtures, Rhassoul or Bentonite Clay mixtures and conditioners.

Since I was wearing Kinky Twists, I used one tablespoon to 3 cups of water and made a tea spritz. (The instructions say to use 2-3 tablespoons to 6 cups of water. A 2oz sample is a little less than 3 tablespoons).

I attempted to use the Spritz as my moisturizer in the first week of my Kinky Twists maintenance routine. After testing the spritz for a few days, my hair felt a bit dry and I knew that spritz was a no-go for me as a leave in/moisturizing spritz. I added some leave-in conditioner and oil to the rest of the spritz, and stored it in the refrigerator. It worked much better this way.

Hair Tea

Once I removed my Kinky Twists, I brewed the rest of the tea to use a final rinse over my entire head. I used a coffee filter to place the petals in, and allowed it in steep in hot water for 45 minutes.  Once the tea cooled, I used it after deep conditioning. I rinsed about 3 times, and while my hair did have lots of body, it didn’t feel as soft as I was expecting. Honestly, it had a “stripped/too clean” feeling.

I normally leave my tea rinses in, and I did attempt to leave it in for about to 2 minutes to see if my hair would feel better, but it didn’t, so I rinsed it out.

I think my hair just wasn’t feeling this combination of herbs. From my readings, Lavender and Rosemary both have “degreasing” properties, and I suspect that those may have been the culprits.

If I were to make any recommendation, it would be to possibly consider adding additional herbs with softening properties to the blend or possibly offer custom blends based on individual hair needs.

Natural Hair Community does have an alternative blend that substitutes Rosemary for Nettle.

My hair sealed with Whipped Amla butter
After applying my leave-in, I did use a very teeny bit of the Whipped Amla butter to seal my ends. It performed well as a sealant.

The price of these products is very reasonable. 2oz samples are $5 each, while the 8oz Teas and Butters retail for $10 and $12 respectively. Natural Hair Community also offers Body Scrubs, Relaxing Herbal Teas and combo sets.
