My results. Peep the “coils” |
Huh? Three Strand Twists? This was my first reaction when I heard about this twisting technique in early 2012. As far as I knew the only thing you could do with 3 strands of hair is braid/plait it.
Well, I’d been schooled, apparently three-strand twists was the newest (at least to me) method of getting great definition on your natural hair.
So why use 3 strands? Well according to my “research”, it allows awesome definition without much separation, and the results of the twist out is slightly “coily-er” than regular twists. Of course, I was excited to give it a try. And try I did…many times and I was unsuccessful even after watching numerous videos on Youtube.
Firstly, all my hands wanted to do was braid. I had to do lots of brain trickery but I still couldn’t get the technique down. Being a lefty made it even more challenging.
I used this Taffy to give my twists some hold. |
Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago when I happened about a video by “SupaNaturalTammy”, a fellow leftie. As I watched the video, I had an “Aha” moment when she said “like a propeller motion”. It all clicked and my hands went to work. I’ll admit that it did take the a lot longer than regular twists. If I recall correctly, it took me about 1.5 hours to complete the twists.
I had to concentrate A LOT so I wouldn’t do what my brain was trained to do with 3 strands of hair….braid/plait.
I used Darcy’s Botanicals Curl Styling Cream with a teeny bit of Nubian Heritage Edge Taming Taffy on top. The Taffy gave my a nice pliable hold.
3-Strand Twists |
2-Strand Twists |
I honestly wanted to prove to myself that I could figure out the technique, and I feel like I did. Small victories count. 🙂
Check out the video by SupaNaturalTammy that helped me learn.
Until next time
i tried doing three strand twists once, but i quickly gave up, wasn’t in the mood.

Ok. I’d love to see your results if you do 😉
Thank you Kay. The results give you that kind of effect because it get’s more coily on the end, if that makes sense. I kept them in for about 3 days I think, I was ready to do something else. The definition was definitely more with the 3 strand twists, but I get decent definition with 2 Strand twists, so I think I’ll stick to those. Thanks for commenting.
Love the frohawk, btw.
I’ve never heard of this style before but I dig it. It’s like a cross between a TST and a curl. How long did you keep them in for? And did you notice more definition in the twistout?
