I recently had a conversation with a young lady who was transitioning from a relaxer. After she complimented me on my hair, she expressed that while she was excited to be doing the Big Chop, she was nervous about how her hair would look, after the fact.
Of course I could totally relate to her concerns because I had been there. I too was nervous about chopping it all off, so I reassured her and shared 3 ways to #LoveYourCurls after the Big Chop.
1) GET TO KNOW YOUR HAIR
After I big chopped, I literally stood in the mirror almost every day, exploring, and getting to know my hair. It was the first time I had really seen the teeny, tiny curls that made up my hair. Every time I washed it, I would see it transform, and again once it dried. I really took the time to get to know my hair and with each passing day, I grew to love it more.
2) DEVELOP A REGIMEN
After the big chop, it is important to develop a regimen to take care of your hair. Keeping your hair conditioned and moisturized will be important in preventing dryness, which can lead to breakage. Developing a regimen will take some time and a bit of trial and error, but once you learn what techniques and products work well for you, you will be all set.
3) WEAR YOUR HAIR WITH CONFIDENCE
No matter what stage in your natural hair journey you are at, it is important to wear your hair with confidence. After all, you are beautiful and your curls are as unique as you are. I know from experience that every style may not turn out the way you may like, but no matter the outcome, rock it with confidence because it’s perfect that way!
