As a kinky, coily, textured hair girl,  keeping my hair stretched is one of the ways I prevent knots as well as matting at the roots. Due to the nature of my hair, coiling up on itself is all it wants to do. I don’t hate shrinkage, but the effects can reek havoc on my hair. When my hair is stretched it breaks less and it’s easier to manage.

I’m not against blow drying but I prefer the heat-free way whenever possible.

My favorite and most effective method (meaning it gives the most stretch) is African Threading. I’ve only done it once, and it does take time to master the technique but the results are amazing.

I learnt how to do threading from GirlsLoveYourCurls on Youtube. Check out her tutorial below:

My second favorite method is the Satin Braid Method. I blogged about this method before and I’ve been asked about the difference between this method and regular braids.Braiding my hair only gives me so much stretch. To achieve the stretch I get from braiding the ribbons through my hair, I’d have to braid and re-braid my hair for about 3 or more days. The Satin braid method is faster.

Using curlformers, Bantu Knots as well as banding are also great ways of stretching your hair. Like African Threading (if done neatly), Bantu Knots/Knot out also double as a style, so it’s a win win situation.

YOUR TURN: What methods do you use to stretch your hair? Please share your techniques below.

Until next time

I have RECENTLY come to realize that my curl formers give me wonderful stretch. I actually came across it by accident when I combed out my puffy curls.. I moisturized my hair and braided it up… The end results were so nice I even clipped my ends from my hair being so stretches out. I was so pleased with the results I re-did the curlformers again NOT with the goal of curls but to stretch using no heat! : )
