This past weekend, I FINALLY went to Natural Grocers. Why is that important you ask? Well, they are Whole Foods direct competitor but they are like Whole Foods and Vitamin Shoppe combined 🙂 The one I went to is directly across from Whole Foods! Don’t know what took me sooo long to go….
Lately, I get excited to go to stores like these, the thought of all the herbs, powders and oils gets my heart pumping. Okay, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but I love browsing the aisle for new finds to experiment with. 🙂
I did a little research before hand and realised they sold Marshmallow Root. What!? I’ve been looking all over for this…I’m too frugal to order it by itself online ( I like free shipping :). When I entered, I asked about Marshmallow root, the clerk said “oh, that’s in the BULK HERBS section”. Bulk herbs???? I was all over it 🙂
Here’s what I picked up:
Marshmallow Root – A welcomed additioned to my ayurvedic regimen. It contains
mucousy substance that make it great for adding slip to products. It’s great for softness.
Fenugreek Seeds – Also known as Methi, smoothes the hair shaft, add shine and conditions. Can be soaked in water and made into a paste.
Calendula flowers – provides luster and body; great for damaged hair
Nettle leaf – Provides shine; great for dry hair, improves texture, conditions and softens.
Yucca Root Powder – Prevents hair loss; cures/prevents dandruff
Red Rose Buds – can be used to make rosewater, which is close to the ph level of hair, thus very moisturising. Also great for adding a pleasant smell to hair.
Comfrey Leaf – used to cover up gray hair; when mixed with sage, it makes dark hair more vibrant
Willow Bark -great for dry itchy scalp; can also be used to treat acne.
Xanthum Gum – added as a thickner to products. Will be adding this to my Flaxseed gel.
I LOVED the fact that the herbs were inexpensive. It gave me the opportunity to try them out without having to buy a pound. I wish more of them came in powder form, it would have been easier to add to my mixes. Never fear though, I can make spritzes, oil infusions and teas, soak them in water or use a mortar and pestle to grind them up 🙂
Can you tell that I’m excited? Hubby says he’s gonna get me a chemistry set and build me a lab! Ha!
Until next time…..
You’re welcome Natural Grocers 🙂 I’m happy to find the herbs locally, wish more of them came in powder form though 🙂
Thanks for the shout-our Hodge. We have been selling affordable single-ingredient foods, herbs, and spices for decades. If you can’t afford to but it, it’s not healthy food, right? Here is the whole assortment: http://www.naturalgrocers.com/shop/catalog/herbs-spices
I experimented a little with some Xanthum gum but I think I in a little too much. They all have different scents, some pleasant…some not so pleasant but the Rose Buds smell GREAT :0
Did you try any of them as yet? What do they smell like?
