I always get a lot of questions about trimming natural hair at home. In the past, I have gone to a professional stylist to have my hair shaped and cut, but I have trimmed my hair myself.
I have decided (I think) that I’m not getting my hair shaped this time around, so I had a much needed trimming session.

How do you know when you might need a trim? Here are a few tell-tale signs
- You’re constantly detangling. Dead unruly ends will cause tangles
- Your ends are dry and “bushy” looking
- You have split ends
- You notice a lot of single strand knots
This was definitely the case with my hair as you can see in the video below on how to trim natural hair at home.
Your hair will look and feel much better once you get rid of those old dead ends.
YOUR TURN: Do you trim your own hair or do you go to a stylist? Tell me in the comments below.
Your hair is beautiful, but I’m not that brave. I like to have mine blow dried straight to catch as many ends as possible and I have it done by a professional.
I trim my ends at home too (Haven’t been in a salon for 15+ years!), and my method is a little bit similar to yours. Next time around, I am going to try it your way! 🙂
Well you’re obviously doing a great job because your hair is FAB Audrey <3
