How to do A Straw Set on Natural Hair

I recently tried a straw set on my natural hair.

I got the urge (as I often do) to try something different with my hair, and I’d been wanting about doing a straw set for as long as I can remember. The thought of installing tiny drinking straws all over my head made me put if off, until I walked into Bed, Bath & Beyond a few weeks ago, and stumbled upon some Milkshake straws. The rest is history…..

I grabbed my jar Curl Enhancing Custard from Obia Natural Hair Care and decided to give it a whirl. When I originally reviewed the custard I was not much of a fan, then I spoke to Obia and she gave me some tips on how to make it work. I’m really glad I decided to use it.

Though time consuming, this style is pretty inexpensive since one pack of  Milkshake straws costs less than $5. I cut the straws in half and used 95 total.

My hair is still holding up on Day 6 and overall I’m pretty pleased with the results. I did massage in a bit of moisturizer yesterday but so far so good.

Check out my experience with installing the straws, my progression from Days 1-3, and how I’ve been maintaining the set in the video below. Thanks so for watching

Have you ever tried a straw set?

Until next time

It turned out gorgeous, but I know that I would probably never do it as I just little to no patience to do a set after pre-pooing, shampooing, detangling and DCing. My sets are as quick as I can make them and even a simple 8-12 braid/twist set takes longer than I’d like. But again, your hair turned out beautifully!! And you look gorg!

    Yep! Straws! 🙂

Thanks, it does take time and patience, but I can’t complain because the results were really nice 🙂

Oh wow, so you used actual straws? Sweet.

The results are beautiful but it looks to labor intensive for me. What can I say? I’m lazy haha I do like how defined and tight the curls are, though. Looks like you can get good wear out of them.

Ok. You did great if you used the smaller straws. Mine died after 7 days because it rained, although in not sure it could have last much longer either way.

I did using smaller straws. It took me 3.5 hours. It came out really cute but it was really time consuming and only lasted 7 days. I used Cantu for naturals coconut oil moisturizer.
