After a very brief hiatus, First Friday Feature is officially back. Meet our first feature for 2013, the beautiful Jael.
1) Introduce yourself. What would you like the readers to know about you?
Hello Beautiful! I am Natural Jael. I am an advocate of natural hair and my passion to help has given birth Natural Hair Community, the blog and Natural Hair Box, the service. Through Natural Hair Community, the blog, I inspire, question, motivate, rejuvenate and create a means to help women through their natural hair journey.
2) What do you love most about being natural? Any challenges?
I love being natural because I have been blessed with a platform to help so many other women. My natural hair displays my uniqueness and beauty. The biggest challenge to me was when I was a new natural and having to dispel myths that I thought were truth. This enlighten me but it made me upset that I had been lied to, for so long and no one saw fit to come back over the years and tell me truth.
3) How do you care for your hair? What’s your go-to style?
I am all about simplicity and using products that are gentle and natural on my hair. I wash and detangle weekly, every four weeks I do a light protein treatment and once every 10 weeks, I use Aphogee 2 Step for preventive maintenance. I am all about preserving my ends. I never technically trim because having my hair even is not important to me. On occasion, no set time period, I dust my ends to remove single strand knots and visible split ends. I love wearing double strand twists. I pin them up and I bun them. They are very versatile and allow me to get up and go.
4) Has wearing your hair in its natural state changed you in any way?
Yes, wearing my hair natural has changed me. I am able to see now with broader stroke. I have the ability to look beyond the surface. It also has given me the opportunity to create a platform to share my story, inspiration and encouragement to women who is looking for help with their journey.
5) If you could give some advice to your “pre-natural” self, what would it be?
Lose all expectations that you have about your hair; those expectations turn in to stumbling blocks.
6) Is there anything else you’d like us to know? Any hobbies you’d like to share?
I have furthered my platform and I am now the owner of Natural Hair Box, an online service that focus on shipping products with gentle natural ingredients to its’ members and building relationships with the product makers. The first boxes are set to release March 2013!
