I lived with my maternal grandparents from birth until I was about 8 years old. They lived in a small, rural village and for part of time that I lived there, there were no electrical lines which meant we didn’t have access to electricity. When the sun went down it was extremely dark and as a child growing up in Grenada, I remember being scared of the dark. When I got home from school I knew I had to get my homework done before the sunset. I recall my grandmother using flashlights, candles and kerosene lamps to provide light until it was time for bed.

This was over 30 years ago and the area where I grew up now has electricity, but in some parts of the world, this is still the case. In some developing communities around the world, kerosene, which is dangerous and toxic is still used to provide light. In other areas, they simply have no light to run businesses, keep health clinics open, or enjoy family time in the comforts of their own home.

Access to light and electricity is something we may take for granted but I know the difference it can make in people’s lives. When I learned about that Direct Energy has partnered with MPOWERD to bring solar Luci lights to the developing world, I was happy to help spread the word.

A Luci Light is an inflatable, waterproof, lightweight, solar light that can provide light for over 12 hours when fully charged by the sun.

For everyone who participates in Direct Energy’s Give Brighter 12 plan MPOWERD will send one Luci light to a developing part of the world, and one to the customers’ home. The Give Brighter 12 plan is a competitively priced 12-month-fixed rate electricity plan. By signing up for this plan, you can make a difference in the life of a family by providing them a solution to their lighting needs.

MPOWERD’s non-profit community partners distribute Luci lights to people in need in countries including Kenya, Haiti, Philippines, and Nepal.

Over 1.5 Billion of people around the world in developing communities don’t have access to reliable, safe, and affordable sources of energy and you can make a difference with a simple decision to #GiveBrighter.
