Today I have the pleasure of introducing my new contributor Chadel. Chadel will be adding her voice to the blog by sharing some of her natural hair styles, tips and more. I’m really excited that her first post is about achieving a flexi-rod set. Many of you have requested tutorials, but I have admitted that this is the one style that I have not quite mastered. Chadel has mastered this style so I’m happy to have her share it with you. 🙂

I absolutely love natural hair, but I’m really passionate about the maintenance and helping people grow their hair. Styling is a bonus. I figure, if you feel comfortable with it and you rock it with confidence, “every mistake is a fashion” (according to my grandmother.) Today I want to share how I achieve my perm rod set on dry natural hair.

Steps:

  • Cleanse:  I always recommend starting styles on freshly washed hair; and I am sure you’ve heard this a million and one times. Why? Clean hair has less product buildup, is more moldable, and more likely to hold a style better.
  • Also, if your hair is anything like mine, it starts to look lackluster and does not keep styles very well when it is wash day. (Sadly, I did not take my own advice this time).

Place hair in twists to airdry. Twists = stretching + less tangles. I dry my hair before putting in my flexi rods because my hair is easier to work with in a stretched state, and it takes A LOT less time to dry

Now to the actual styling…

  • Take a medium sized section of hair and apply your gel/holding product of choice. I used the Ecostyler clear gel. (not my favorite but it did the job). Focus on the ends of your hair so that they will not be frizzy after take down.

If your hair needs some moisture, add it in before applying your holding product. I use Cantu Leave in conditioning cream.

  • Wrap the end of your hair around the flexi-rod to one end of the flexi-rod. Continue to wrap hair until the end is secure on the flexi-rod.
  • Begin to spiral your wrist and the flexi-rod around the length of your hair towards the root.HOW-TO-DO-A-FLEXI-ROD-SET-ON-4B-4C-HAIR (2)

TAKEDOWN:

  1. Coat hand with an oil or oil based product to prevent hair from frizzing up during the separation process.
  2. Remove flexi rods by gently turning wrist and flexi rod in the opposite direction.
  3. Gently separate the medium sized sections, paying attention to where the hair naturally separates.
  4. Voila! And you’re donehow-to-a-flexi-rod-set-4b-4c-hair-chadel-2
