Maintaining A Blow Out on Natural Hair VeePeeJay

A few weeks ago I blew my hair out using the Shea Moisture Blow Out Cream and the Conair 3 in 1 Hair Designer. The Conair Hair Designer promises to smooth, straighten and shine in one step. While my hair was not “straight”, I could definitely tell the difference between the Hair Designer and a regular blow dryer.

After I posted the video on YouTube, I got a few questions about how I maintained the blow out and how my hair held up.

Here are my 4 tips for maintaining a blow out on natural hair.

1) Start with properly deep conditioned and moisturized hair.

Prior to blow drying, I made sure my hair was deep conditioned well. Once I finished cleansing, I applied Earth’s Nectar Coconut Curls Leave in conditioner which is also formulated to be used with a blow dryer. I allowed my hair to dry a bit prior to blow drying. Doing this step, helps to prevent dryness that is often associated with using heat styling tools.

2) Use a non-water based product for maintenance.

This is why step 1 is important. If your hair is dry after blow drying, you’ll have to use a water based product, and doing so will most likely cause your hair to revert. If your aim is to get your blow out to last longer, using a product without water is a good way to go. Humidity might still do you in, but hey, at least you tried 🙂

After blow drying,  I styled my hair with the Eden Bodyworks Coconut Hair Balm which contains no water. Because my hair was properly hydrated,  I didn’t have any issues with dryness.

3) Protect your hair at night

Maintaining A Twistout At NightSleeping with a satin bonnet/scarf/pillow is just as important whether your hair is blown out or not. Avoiding cotton pillowcases and scarves helps to prevent your hair from drying out. If your hair is straightened you can even try wrapping it at night.

4) Add a little CURL.

Many like using flexirods or rollers on blown out hair. This is actually a great way to keep your ends smooth and stretched. Don’t want to be bothered with rollers and rods? Tie a knot on the ends of your twist to give it a similar effect. Bantu Knots and Pin curls also work great too.
