Let’s face it. Almost everyday, new natural hair product companies are born. This is great, because it gives us tons of options. When I first went natural I loved trying products. Well, l still do, but I wasn’t the type to run out and purchase every new product.  If an item looked interesting, I’d add it to my “to try” file. I also love saving money and getting the best value from my purchases. Today I’m sharing 7 ways to save money on natural hair products!

Saving Money on Natural Hair Products

Purchase when there’s a sale

This is an obvious one but purchasing products when they are on sale is a great way to save money. When I used to buy products, I rarely purchased something that was not on sale. These days you can pretty much tell when the sales are happening. Valentine’s Day sales have just ended, and next up is Easter and there will be tons of sales. Unless you really need to purchase something, you can save some dough by waiting.

 Swap with friends

It’s easy to accumulate a lot of product. Instead of going out and buying more, you can swap them out with a curlfriends. You can also sell your gently used items in Facebook swap groups and on places like the CurlyNikki swap board.

 Enter giveaways

Giveaways are a great way to score free products. Brands and bloggers are always hosting giveaways. There is no guarantee that you would win but if you do, you can score some free products and keep some money in your pocket 🙂

Request/Purchase Samples

Purchasing/Requesting samples is a great way to save some money. Many brands offer free samples if you cover the cost of shipping. Others offer sample packs for sale. Purchasing sample packs is a great way to test the a product without committing to the cost of a full size.

Go through sites like Ebates

Ebates gives you cashback on your online purchases. If you purchase products on sites like Amazon, Target, Walgreens, CVS, Drugstore.com, you can get cashback by going through Ebates. If there’s a sale, you can save even more.

Attend Hair Events

Attending a natural hair event is another awesome way to save money on products. At almost any event you attend, there’s usually a swag bag that is worth much more than the cost of your ticket. It’s a win-win situation. You meet new friends, have a great time and walk away with some awesome products.

Sign up for Subscription Boxes.

Subscription boxes are a great way to try new products while saving some serious dough. Most boxes range from $20 -$40 for *mostly* full sized items. This is a great option especially for new naturals or those trying to find staple products without breaking the bank.

Some of the popular subscription boxes include: CURLBoxOnyxBox, Cocotique, Curl Collection and CurlKit. Click HERE to save 10% off your first CurlKit.

These are all really great tips and most I hadn’t thought to do. But they make so much sense. I will definitely start utilizing these tips cause all these products add up so quickly!

Thanks Christine. Yep, it can get really expensive over time.

I think I have spent too much money over the years between figuring out what works for my hair and then my daughter so these tips would of helped big time. I’m going to look into ebates and see how I can save some money. Thanks

I wish there were as many natural hair care products when I was a preteen rocking my curly kinks. It would have been so much easier to style. Swapping is a great idea too.

Yes, we definitely have a lot more options now.

I used to be a big PJ but products are expensive where I live so in addition to some of the tips here I have taken to the kitchen to whip up what I can (leave in/ detangler, flaxseed gel, whipped butter).

That definitely makes a lot of sense!

Thanks for the tips, good ideas! I generally try to get all of my natural hair care products on sale, and enter a few giveaways from time to time. I had been meaning to sign up for ebates, I just did, thanks for the reminder!

These are great tips. I usually try to stay away from subscription boxes because the money you spend monthly doesn’t really equate to product uses for me. I do love trades shows and swaping. Right now I’m sticking with my tried and trues until they run out as one product I will no longer be able to purchase.

    • February 19, 2015 / 12:33 AM

Thanks Melody! I’m not into subscription boxes either lol. They weren’t even on the my list until Gabrielle reminded me. I prefer to buy what I like or like you I’ve been only replacing items that run out.

I now swear by certain products (Shea Moisture, Carmella Rose, Oyin Handmade) so I know what to by and I try to wait until there is a sale. This keeps me from being a product junkie. Great tips as always! Also if you buy your products from Target be sure to download the cartwheel app because sometimes they have natural hair products on sale. Lastly I have a Target Debit Card so I save 5% every time I shop, it’s not a lot but it helps.

    • February 19, 2015 / 12:34 AM

Yes, I forgot about the CartWheel App. Thanks Siohban.

Shoot, I didn’t know there was such a thing as a Tarjay debit card…perhaps I need to get one! Thanks.

      • February 25, 2015 / 7:47 AM

They have credit or debit. I use the debit one and I save 5% each time I use it. It’s not a lot but it does add up.

Oh, you know I need these tips. I definitely want more products but I want to stick to a budget. The BOGO sales at Target and Walgreens are great.

    • February 19, 2015 / 12:35 AM

Yes I love those BOGO sales too but staying on budget is important too.

I use to be a product junkie but started finding hair products I enjoy and stuck to it. Great tips Vee!

Thanks Lou! Girl my PJ days are long over too 🙂

I love Shea Moisture products which are expensive in Canada. So when I go to NY I usually buy at least three of the product, just so I won’t have to buy it at an expensive price. That’s my way to save lolol.

    • February 19, 2015 / 12:36 AM

Makes a lot of sense Unik! You would think it wouldn’t be so expensive.

      Way to save. Thank you!
