I love DIY beauty treatments. In this post I’ll be sharing 6 effective beauty ingredients you can find right in your kitchen.

HONEY: Honey is one of my all time favorites. Its natural antibacterial properties makes it great for the treating mild breakouts and blemishes. It is also high in anti-oxidants which makes it great for slowing down the signs of premature aging. Want glowing skin? Honey does that too. It’s super moisturizing and a great way to give you that healthy glow. I use honey in hair care as well as skin care. When I need a quick fix, I apply raw honey to my clean, wet skin, allow it to sit for about 20 minutes. After rinsing, my skin is always soft and moisturized.

TURMERIC: Growing up in Grenada, turmeric is used a lot in cooking. A few years ago I learnt of its awesome skincare benefits when used topically. Turmeric has numerous benefits including increasing your skin’s elasticity, brightening your complexion, reducing wrinkles and inhibiting facial hair growth. I know I can’t be the only one who has a little bit of upper lip ‘fuzz” going on, so I generously apply my masques to this area. I tend to avoid my eyebrow because I want to keep of those hairs 😉 . In this post, I shared my one of my turmeric masque recipes.
EDIT: I use a flat make up brush to apply my turmeric masques to prevent my finger nails from being stained.

YOGURT: Yogurt contains lactic acid, a natural alpha hydroxy which functions to exfoliate and smooth the skin. Yogurt also has anti-fungal & anti-bacterial properties. Since I turned 30, I’ve had one too many episodes of pesky breakouts. One of my favorite combos is yogurt (PLAIN), turmeric, honey and a dash of Almond oil to make a quick masque. When done consistently (coupled with drinking water and working out) I definitely see a reduction is blemishes and discoloration.

LEMONS: Lemons are another one of my favorite ingredients. I love adding them to my water, as well as squirting a bit of the juice into a mix of honey and brown sugar to make a quick facial and lip/underarm scrub. The Vitamin C and Citric Acid in lemons help to brighten and lighten discolorations over time.

PAPAYA: Truth be told, I prefer to eat my Papayas. They are one of my favorite fruits. The Vitamin A & Papain enzyme in Papaya makes it great for exfoliating and removing dead skin cells to remove glowing skin. I have tried a smashed papaya, honey & almond oil mask with great results.

CINNAMON: Yet another great ingredient that I’ve used all my life. Cinnamon tea was a staple in my household as a child. I also use this awesome ground spice in baking and cooking. When I started having issues with break outs, my research led me to cinnamon. Cinnamon has natural anti-microbial properties which also makes it great for treating blemishes. A quick masque of ground cinnamon, honey and olive oil will leave your skin feeling tingly and refreshed.

Thanks for posting this! I purchased some turmeric from Trader Joe’s awhile ago and never used it. I’m definitely going to try the mask you suggested.

I’ve tried honey and I must admit, it does do wonders as you said! I also used honey on my acne to dry it out and work on my discoloration. That works wonders too. I need to get up on game with this cinnamon and tumeric. I had no idea about those two! Thanks for sharing!
