I was contacted to review a set of products from OBI Natural Hair Care. I received the Curl Hydration Spray (8oz/$10), Curl Moisture Cream (4oz/$10), Curl Enhancing Custard (12oz/$15) and a sample of the Coconut Shea Shampoo Bar. The products arrived nicely packaged and I was very pleased to see the tamper proof cover on the Cream and the Custard.

OBI Natural Hair Care is a Dallas based natural hair care line whose mission is to produce pH balanced, non toxic, herbal based products for men and women with natural hair. All their products are cruelty free, gluten, silicone, phthalate, petroleum free, vegan and contain paraben and formaldehyde free preservatives, according to their website.

They also focus on using ingredients such as argan, avocado and grapeseed oil, as well as essential oils of lavender (the scent of the moisture cream), rose, lemongrass, sage and neem. Burdock root, amla, nettle and shikakai are also in the ingredient lists.

The first product I used from the line was the Curl Enhancing Custard, which is a very thick, “globby” product with a very clean smell.  It says it can be used “define curls, smooth edges or aid in updo styles”. I used the custard to smooth my edges for my High Bun style. I lightly misted my (clean) hair, applied the custard and tied my edges down with a scarf for about 30 minutes. My edges were smooth for the most part, but some of my little stubborn hairs were still a little fuzzy. I was out for almost 6 hours and they didn’t fuzz up anymore. The custard did apply slightly white and I could still see some residue when I took the bun down the next day.

Next I used the Custard in conjunction with the Curl Hydration Spray and the Curl Moisture Cream for a “Wash & Go“. ( I decided to try a wash n go to test out the “define curls” claim, because I previously had success with doing one, otherwise I would not have done one.) After washing my hair, I misted it with some of the spray, applied a tiny bit of coconut oil and then applied the Curl Moisture Cream. The cream itself is moisturizing, and as soon as it is applied to your hair you can tell that it’s pH balanced because it instantly smoothes it.
After the cream, I took a “generous amount” per the directions, and applied it in sections. As soon as I did the first section, I knew that this was not for wash n go’s for ME. The Custard does not have any “slip” and is very thick as mentioned above, so that made it very difficult to rake/shingle through my hair. I kept on trucking and completed my entire head.  It looked OK at first, but as it started to dry, it got worse. When I woke up on Day 2, my hair still was not fully dry, and did not look great at all. (pic above). The sections that were dry felt a tiny bit crunchy.

I decided to try the Custard/Cream combo one last time for a braid out. This time I only lightly misted my hair with the spray, which has a slight sweet scent and is my favorite of the bunch. After almost 18 hours, the majority of my braids still were not dry, so of course they puffed up. In terms of definition, the custard does a decent job at that.

The Curl Moisture Cream is a good moisturizer. I found that it worked very well in conjunction with the spray as a daily refresher/moisturizer. The pic above shows my results from using the curl hydration spray and the curl moisture cream alone to retwist at night.  I did use the Shampoo bar once, although it smells AMAZING and lathers really well, it did make my hair feel a tad too clean, not stripped by any means, but almost squeaky, which I don’t like.
Final verdict:
  • I love that these products are all natural, cruelty free and pH balanced. The scents are all very light and not overpowering at all.  My favorite of the bunch is the Curl Hydration Spray which instantly softens and smoothes my hair. I only have about 1oz left and it’s definitely something I would purchase again.
  • The Curl Moisture Cream is a good moisturizer and it left my hair feeling great for at least two days. I would consider purchasing it again, but it’s not a must have item for me.
  • The Curl Enhancing Custard was a fail for me. I will probably use the rest for smoothing my edges/updos. I didn’t like the fact that the product takes so long to dry.
  • My BIGGEST complaint with all these products, even the spray which I love, is that they seemed to make my hair really dull every time I used them. To be fair, only the Curl hydration Spray promised to make my hair shiny, but it didn’t do that at all. I would have preferred if they would not have taken me to “dullville” though…me no likey dull hair 🙁

I am currently trying out the products. I used the custard for a high bun and loved it. I actually have a post now of the high bun. I also used it for a wash and go puff and I loved it as well. I am not sure if I will attempt a wash and go. The spray and the moisturizer were okay. I liked the shampoo too. My hair did not feel stripped.
