If you’re like me, you probably think Coconut oil is coconut oil is coconut oil! In otherwords, they’re all the same. Well all Coconut Oil is not necessarily created equal. I had the opportunity to review this Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions.

According to the website

“This coconut oil is made on Mt. Banahaw and surrounding areas from organic coconuts. Coconuts are used fresh (within 24-48 hours of harvest) from small family farms on Mt. Banahaw and other rural places in Quezon Province, the coconut capital of the Philippines. Only the highest quality coconuts are hand-picked from each harvest. The volcanic soil of Mt. Banahaw makes these organic coconuts some of the most nutritionally rich coconuts in the world!

Testing done in independent laboratories on coconut oil antioxidantsreveals higher levels of phenolic antioxidants than other coconut oils.  The fresh coconut meat is shredded (wet milled), and then cold-pressed using the water from inside the coconuts to make coconut milk. The milk is then allowed to sit for about half a day, while the oil naturally separates from the heavier water. The oil is then filtered from the curds (coconut solids). No chemical or high-heat treatment is used, and this oil contains no trans fatty acids. We do NOT mass produce this oil. It is made by families who are coconut farmers using old-fashioned traditional methods that have been used in the Philippines for hundreds of years.

This high-grade Virgin Coconut Oil has a long shelf life due to the high antioxidant properties.  It is a much more labor-intensive method of producing coconut oil, and cannot be replicated by machine through mass-production. Family producers for Mt. Banahaw make the Gold Label standard in small batches. “

When I first received this oil, I was very pleasantly surprised at how creamy it was. It had a very milky/creamy appearance and this creaminess was felt when rubbed between your fingers. I am not a coconut oil expert but I have gone through my fair share of coconut oil as I use it for cooking, on my skin and of course in my hair. I specifically used this oil:

  • As a pre-poo
  • Mixed with Castor oil as a sealant and on my ends.
  • Added to my deep conditioner
  • To sautee vegetables
  • To make Popcorn
  • As a lip balm/moisturizer at bedtime
Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of this coconut oil. It smells and tastes like coconuts and as mentioned before it is very smooth and creamy. It does retail for $19.95 for 32oz, but I can say that it is very high quality oil and the fact hand made in small batches makes it unique and second to none. Of course, with Coconut Oil a little bit goes a long way so it will last for a very long time.
