Shrinkage is one of the things that can be annoying about natural hair! Although, it works to your advantage sometimes….ok so it’s not annoying but depending on the look you’re going for it can be a “challenge.”
So how do you combat shrinkage? Well you can blow dry your hair. However, at this point, I choose not to put heat on my hair.
Stretching natural hair has it’s advantages:
  • It shows your “real” length 🙂
  • It helps to prevent knots (that result from the hair curling up on itself)
  • It makes certain styles look better in my opinion. Styles such as mini-twists look better on me when my hair is stretched.
There are many heat-less methods used by naturals to stretch their hair. These include braiding(just the hair), banding, Bantu knotting and even threading. For me, using satin strips/ribbons seems to give me the best stretch.
So that’s exactly what I did! I used satin ribbons and braided them into my damp moisturized hair and allowed it to completely dry.  I’ve also used an old satin scarf that I cut into strips….works just as well.
This what my hair looked like after I took the ribbons out. I picked out the left side 🙂
Here it is FULLY picked out! I love my BIG hair 🙂
I put it in a puff just for fun! lol Looks I like blow dried it but I didn’t 🙂

Do you stretch your hair? What methods do you use?
Until next time

You are SO gorgeous! And so is your hair! I love your blog; I just stumbled upon it because I accidentally bought the Tangle Tamer @ Sally’s instead of the Tangle Teezer and I wanted to see if there was a difference or not, and so I found your other post. But anyway, I am going to try this method tonight because I am sick of using heat on my hair! Thanks 🙂
